We love riding.
At Dover Cyclery, we carry bikes for all ages, clothing and gear, fuel, tires, tools, and more, and we love to get people into cycling. Whether you’re into gravel, BMX, mountain biking, leisure riding, road racing, triathlons, or fixed-gear—we’ll set you up and keep you rolling.
Cyclists come to us from all over the Seacoast, southern Maine, and even travel from Wolfeboro, Alton, and Gilmanton for our services and builds.
Mike Beshey: Bike Rider, Mechanic, Old School Skater
Co-founder and owner Mike Beshey has been a mechanic for 30 years. Originally from south Georgia, Mike moved to the area in 1980 when he was stationed at Pease Air Force Base. When he moved here, he fell in love with two things—cycling and a girl named Kathy. Mike and Kathy got married, bought a house in Dover, and they still live there today.
Mike rides road, gravel, single speed, mountain bikes, and fat bikes. He's also into post-punk, 80s synth-pop, and old school rollerskating. You might even catch him rolling around the shop some time.
Beshey is widely known for being the most skilled–and nicest–mechanic around. From a superbike build to a simple puncture repair, he’ll treat you and your bike with the same care no matter what the job.
How it all started -
There are some things that can’t be replaced by online shopping and box stores. The local bike shop is one of them. Before we tell our story, we want to quickly tell the story of Tony’s Cyclery, because it was the loss of Tony’s that originally inspired us to open Dover Cyclery.
There are some things that can’t be replaced by online shopping and box stores. The local bike shop is one of them.
In 1958, World War II vet and Strafford Farms milkman, Anthony Ferrigno, opened Tony’s Bicycle Shop with $50, a few tools, and two used bicycles. He worked out of his house in Durham and in an old carriage house on Central Ave. He then moved to Fourth Street (the location that most of us remember). Over the years, Tony’s also had locations in Rochester, Nashua, and Portsmouth.
For nearly 50 years, Tony’s was a Dover landmark; it was everyone’s bike shop. Our own Mike Beshey worked at the Dover and Rochester locations starting in the early 80s! When Tony’s closed in 2007, it left a void in the cycling community.
Dovery Cyclery is born.
Lamenting Tony’s closure one day, longtime friends and cycling buddies, Wayne Richard and Mike Beshey decided to open their own shop. They rented space in the old Holmwoods Furniture store (across from the former Tony’s) and spent the winter of 2007 fixing up the space. Dover Cyclery officially opened on May 1, 2008.
Word quickly got around, and within a year they bought their share of the building, expanded inventory, and brought in a second mechanic—Rob Ball, also from Tony’s! After 12 great years together, Wayne retired and Mike bought the shop outright, making him the full owner.
Today, Dover Cyclery serves cyclists from all over the Seacoast, southern Maine, the Lakes Region, and beyond. People traveling to the area for bikepacking, touring, and events like Raid Rockingham and the Pumpkinman Triathlon Festival will also send their bikes ahead to Mike to have him assemble and prepare them for their event.
